Sometimes — depends on landing time, luggage, ferry schedule, and comfort moving at night. Late arrivals are often easier if you sleep near Cancún or Puerto Juárez once and cross in the morning.

Not always — beach-town stays often work with transfers + occasional taxis. Cars help for cenotes, ruins, Costco runs, multi-town itineraries.

Three real options. Private shuttle ($90–130 USD) is the fastest door-to-door — ~1h 45min. ADO bus ($20 USD) is reliable and goes to the Tulum ADO station — ~2h 15min. Renting a car ($35–60/day) makes sense if you'll be doing cenotes and beach hopping. Tulum's new airport (TQO) flies a few US routes — worth checking if a TQO option exists for your trip.

Two ferry companies (Ultramar and Winjet) run between Playa and Cozumel every hour. ~45 min crossing. ~$23–28 USD round trip per person. Buy tickets at the Playa Fundadores pier or online. Ferries run 6am–11pm. Take the first morning ferry if you want a full Cozumel day; last return is 10pm.

Three real options: pre-booked private transfer (~$60–95 USD, door-to-door, easiest), ADO bus ($16–20 USD, drops you at Playa's central bus station), or official airport taxi (~$80–120 USD). Skip every "free shuttle" desk past customs — those are timeshare pitches.

Two operators (Ultramar, Winjet) run from Playa's main pier at Calle 1 Sur. ~45 min crossing, ~$300–425 MXN one-way per adult, every 30–60 min from 7am to ~11pm. Buy at the terminal — no need to pre-book unless it's a holiday weekend.

Colectivos are shared 15-passenger vans that run constantly between Playa and Tulum (and stops in between like Akumal, Puerto Aventuras). 40–50 pesos one-way (~$2–3 USD). 50–60 min ride. Flag one down on the highway or board at Av. 2 Norte × Calle 2 in Playa. Cash only — pay the driver.

Tren Maya opened in late 2023 and now runs Cancun ↔ Playa ↔ Tulum ↔ inland to Mérida and Campeche. It's modern, scenic, and reasonably priced (~$15–30 USD per leg), but the stations are far from town centers (most need a 20–40 min taxi). Useful for longer regional trips (Cancun → Mérida), less practical for short Playa ↔ Tulum hops.

Uber + InDriver work in Playa and are usually cheaper than street taxis. They're safer for tourists too — your route, driver, and fare are logged. Local taxi-driver friction has eased but watch your pickup zone (avoid 5th Avenue pickups; walk a block off).
